Threatened in Ramsgate

One afternoon while being left alone with the boys, while my husband takes time off to play golf I get to spend some quality time with the boys, I decided to leave Zander with my mom (Thanks Ma!) and take Quintus and Jay to the beach.  Quintus badly wanted to learn how to ride some waves with his boogie board. Down to the beach we went.  I took him where I knew the waves wouldn’t be too rough.  At first he battled a bit but as soon as I got into the sea (fully dressed) he got the hang of it.   He loved it!

Jason was playing around on the rocks, cheering on his brother every now and again.

I noticed that there was only one other family with us on the beach.  As soon as they started packing up, I got the boys out of the sea.  As kids are though, it took us longer to get off the beach by which time we were alone in the parking area.

I noticed a suspicious looking man coming towards us.  I pushed the kids to get to the car quicker but he was there first.  Stopping the boys from getting into the car.  I went into fight or flight mode.  Not knowing if we should run, scream, talk, get into the car.  Thankfully I managed to stay calm.  I quickly walked around to the other side of the car and got the boys in there.  When I tried to get into the car, he came and stood in front of me again.  I didn’t want to aggravate him, so asked him nicely if there was anything I could help him with.  He just stared at me.  I pushed myself past him and into the car.

I had my folks car there and couldn’t find the automatic lock for the doors.  I pushed every damn button I could find, finally locking the door just as he started knocking on the window.  I started the car and couldn’t get it into gear.  By this time totally freaked out and not so calm at all.  I rode off tyres screeching and all.  Weak with fear.

I stopped at the closest public place.  I just couldn’t drive.  I needed to get a hold of myself.  I had a coffee while the kids played.  (after asking me a load of questions as to what exactly had happened and me explaining how they should always just do as I say in such a situation)

Even though “nothing” happened, the fear was that something could have.  I had the boys with me and anything could have happened.   Tommie, my brother and my dad came to the coffee shop after I phoned them (they were on their way home).  My protective brother went out looking for this guy and I just broke down crying.

Needless to say, I never went anywhere alone again while on vacation.

hey thanks for the “dot”! haha. you know it’s funny. we have close friends from sa (check out kathy or david) and i’m always asking them to ask their families to click on to my blog. africa is the only major continent where my poor blog doesn’t seem to generate any interest. :-)

OH Mel, I’m so sorry you had a bad experience. I’m sure you were very shaken. Unfortunately this kind of incident and worse is becoming common place all over SA. Glad you are OK and didn’t become a statistic and victim, but it is still intimidating.

  5. Karin Says:

I *TOTALLY* understand how freaked you got. I had a similar experience except that the guy was asking me for money. I had the bubby in the back seat – and I was standing at his door with it open – and all I could think was that, I couldn’t get from where i was to the drivers seat and lock the doors before this guy had time to do something to the bubby. THe bubby was only about a month old at this point. My hubby had run into the shops and I’d gone round to the back to give the bubby a dummy or something. Anyway, this guy kept asking for money, and I kept saying I had none (true since I hadn’t even brought a handbag – only bubby’s stuff) and I kept saying, but my husbands’ coming back you can ask him. At which point this guy says, “Can I wait for your husband” which TOTALLY put me on ALERT because it was like he didn’t believe me and was challenging me by asking. I told him he was welcome to wait, but that my husband was ‘not a nice guy’ – at which point – the nice man from the car next door notices my predicament and says, “HI Jenny! HOw are you!?” as if he knew me – and then the dodgy guy takes off running. I was *SO* appreciative that this guy had realised I was in trouble – and actually bothered to try and help. I was *SO* shaken after that too. I couldn’t help but think WHAT A PIECE OF SH*T that the dodgy guy was to try and prey on me with a little baby! When I told the hubby – he was like, I’M GOING AFTER HIM – WHICH WAY DID HE GO? I’m like, “YOU STUPID AS*HOLE WHAT TOOK YOU SO FRIGGING LONG!!!? AND NO YOU CANNOT GO AFTER HIM WITH YOUR WIFE AND BABY IN THE CAR DUMBASS!!! WHAT IF HE’S ARMED!!?”Of course this is just another reason why sometimes this country REALLY SUCKS.

just shows you what all this crime is doing to us! you can’t even enjoy the afternoon with your kids on the beach!!!!! It is bloody ridiculous! I am just glad you did the right thing – you will probably find he was some deranged man looking for some change to by his next “half jack”! It is just not fair on our kids – they are growing up prisinors in their own country!!!!!!!! You know after our attack I am even more nervous – you should see me when I am out and about! I hate it and I am alway’s scared! The trick I suppose is never to let your guard down cause that is when they strike! Take Care out there and look after those beautiful boy’s!

  13. Randi Says:

  14. Delane Says:

what a shame your afternoon with your boys got spoilt

  16. Alisa Says:

OMG Mel. You were quick on your feet. I don’t know if I could be that calm. I am so glad you and the boys are OK. I’m proud of you!

It is so terrible that you have this going on in SA and there is no law and order. I hear it all the time from my MIL. How is CT going to have the soccer game in 2010? How will the Gov protect everyone, if they can’t even protect their people now on a daily basis??

  17. Tiffany (cg_gunswife) Says:

Oh wow Melany! My heart was pounding reading that! Thank God you and the boys are just fine. I don’t blame you for not wanting to go out alone again. Whew. Hugs!

  18. Kay Says:

Oh Melany… how terrifying. I’m so, so relieved that you are ok; that your boys are ok. HUGE HUGS.

  19. Glad you were not frozen with fear and managed to drive off safely instead. We can never be too careful :)

  20. Bond Girl Says:

I had a similar thing in Ramsgate on the beach alone with the boys – a strange man followed me along the path all the way back to the cottage – fortunately the cottage had secure fencing and a lockable gate to the beach. The feeling of fear is kuk. At the waffle house once I had a strange incident of a man taking pictures of my kids and leaving the restuarant immediately – was not a patron at the restuarant – just followed me in and took pictures of my kids. So much for public places being any ’safer’

  21. Carolanne Says:

Wow! That would have been so scary!
Glad you got out of there safely.

  22. Michelle Says:

Oh my gosh how scary that must have been! I can’t even imagine the terror you felt! How creepy that he didn’t say anything to you and then knocked on your window. I’m so glad nothing happened!
