Quintus was extremely excited when I picked him up from school yesterday. I have mentioned before that their school has a wonderful motivation system. This is not only for individual pupils but also the classes as a whole. During the term Quintus’ class acquired the most points out of all the classes in the school and they got the day off today! The last day of the school term.
Now Jay is only in Grade R and in all reality he could still be in pre-school. However he is not and his classes are on the school premises. Making him a part of the school. I took him to school today. Even though school got out at 10 am, he still went to school.
I want my kids to learn that when you work for something, you reap the benefits. So Jay went even though I could easily have kept him home. You know what though? He didn’t complain. Not once. Just shows that the times I have done this kind of things before, they have learned that you don’t get the benefits unless you work for it.
So I ended up being very proud of both boys.

You are a great mom! Too few parents teach their kids lessons like that anymore, and so many grow up thinking that things should just be given to them instead of having to work for it. You definitely have reason to be proud! =)

That’s cool. My son will be in school until June 25th. But we will have our summer break, and you… your winter break? Interesting.

My sister in Capetown was trying to explain that to me. About grade R. So, this is the second time I’ve heard about it. It’s different than in America. You never told me how you ended up in South Africa. Have you always lived there? Did you move there later in life? My sister said it is real pretty there. I know she lives close enough to the beach. I wish I did…

You are so right to have Q reap his benefits. I’m all about that too. Right now I’m having a hard time trying to teach Skippy that *everything is not yours*. He’s in a phase right now where her seriously thinks that whatever is FLippers, is HIS. Even the baby gym. He’s happy to watch Flipper playing in it, and does cute things like asking him to sing (come baba, sing!) but after awhile, he’s tired of dangling some of the toys - and INSISTS on HAVING HIS TURN. I mean hello, a nearly 3yr old in a baby gym? I think not. I reckon he’ll learn soon anyway, if i keep showing him
At least before he tries to get back into the jolly jumper. Ha ha ha.

You are right on the money! We do the same thing here for our kids. You don’t automatically receive the same benefit someone else does just so you won’t feel bad. Great job Mel!
