My matric (prom) dance
I’m sure most look back on their matric dance with fondness. Me, not so much. Firstly I had a boyfriend who had moved to another town just two months before our matric dance. He had been in school with me for 4 years. The school refused him to go with, saying that since he wasn’t in our school anymore, he can’t go with.
At that stage I asked the woman making my dress to stop, since I had no plans on going. I really didn’t like the dress either and didn’t want to show up in that thing.
My brother had a bad car accident 10 days before the matric dance. We all went to stay in Pretoria for the 10 days to be near him. He was in ICU for most of that time with us not knowing if he was going to make it from the one moment to the next.
They day they discharged him was also the day of my matric dance. My one friend literally begged me to go. I had at that stage, no finished dress, no shows, no-one to do my hair. Nothing. My eldest brother brought me back home while I had asked the dress-maked to pls finish the dress. There was no time to fit it. I ran around frantically looking for shoes to fit my dress. I couldn’t find anything and painted my shoes. Yes. I painted them. I went to the hairdresser and got a bad hairdo. See the recipe for disaster. Since I had no date, I asked our neighbours son to “take” me. He is a year younger but thankfully had a suit.
My folks got back just in time to drop us off at the hall. While the other kids pitched up in extremely expensive cars – some just hired for the night – and dropped off right in front of the hall aka red carpet style, my mom dropped us off a couple of blocks away. I can’t blame her, since it was near impossible to drop us off quickly and get home for my brother. So we walked two blocks to the hall and by then I knew I should have turned around and went home.
My friends all looked stunning. I looked bad. Really bad. I could easily have won the “most badly dressed” competition. Thankfully the night ended without me dying of embarrassment.
I’m the one
in the ugly dress and bad hair second from right.
