Super Mom

Maybe I’m paranoid.  Who knows.  Maybe I just care enough about my children to want them to be safe.  Who knows.

Quintus and Jason slept over at the in-laws last night.  No problem.

My MIL asked to take them and their cousin to the movies this morning.  No problem.

I phoned to ask what time they will be back, since I had plans for this afternoon.

My MIL said that she’s not sure, won’t I have a look as to what time the movie starts.  What movie I ask?….oh the one with the age restriction…of course.  Language and violence nogal.  My kids live in South Africa but I do tend to keep them away from violence.

After having a look at the other movies available and seeing that they all have age restrictions, I said that they can watch that one but if it is too much for Jason, she must please rather go out with him.

No she says, she’s not going, she’s just dropping them off.

They are 7 and 9 and she is dropping them off?  Okay, with their cousin who is 11 but my boys are 7 and 9!!!

I said, thanks but no thanks.  She can just drop the boys off at work, I’ll take them to the movies tonight.

What do I find out later?

She left them at a games centre, while she went shopping…….

I didn’t want her to leave them alone at the movies and she leaves them at a GAMES CENTRE!!!  Have you seen those places?  You could lose a horse in there.

I can’t believe she thought it was okay to do that.

  1. Oh Mel! My heart skipped so many beats while reading this post! I couldn’t believe my eyes. I don’t think you paranoid, but there must be something the matter with your MIL to think that they’ll safe without her, anywhere for that matter.

I would be livid!!!! That is way too young, IMO. I am so sorry. 😦

Jon spent the night with a buddy once and the kid’s Dad took them to the movies & he left them there. Jon was maybe 10 at the time. I was NOT pleased. Didn’t even ask me if it was okay to take him, let alone for him to see the movie (rated PG-13) and then left them there!

    • What is up with some parents!?

  3. My gosh. My boys are 8 and 9 and I would never do that. What’s the point of her taking them if she’s just gonna drop them off somewhere unattended? Sheesh. You are NOT being too overprotected. My MIL has a pool with no fence and so we don’t allow them to babysit. When I was little, I fell in a pool when I went alone in the backyard at my aunts house. Thankfully I made it out after someone heard a splash. But can you imagine? That’s why I don’t take my chances.

    • Oh wow. So glad someone got you out before something horrible happened!

  4. That’s kind of stupid thing my in-laws would do, which is why they aren’t allowed to see my kids without us around.

    • This is the first time in YEARS that my kids have slept over at the in-laws. Will be MANY years again before I let them do that!

  5. Oh.My.Goodness! I don’t know what else to say, but, no, you’re not paranoid.

Oh my word! And it is proven and documented by kiddie specialists/shrinks/whatever that a child of that age – no matter how intelligent – does not have the capacity to be left alone/cross the street alone/go up to the garage shop alone on their bike //
I would be fuming, livid, angry, full of wrath …..
go check out news24 – at the moment they are asking for worst thing MIL hass done to you, this should certainly be entered!

Games centres freak me out. I hate them and never take my kids there. I would not even let Tristan go to a movie on his own and he is now 11.

PS: your comment about the horse made me laugh though. 🙂

I don’t have kids yet, but completely agree with you – I would also be upset – games centre or anywhere is not for kids of that age to be left alone.

  10. OMG!!

I’m not over reacting here. I *would* *be* *SO* **ANGRY** !!!

Those games centres are full of pick pockets and snatchers and God only knows what else.

Sometimes I think the generation before us have to WAKE UP and see that things have changed. My mom also thinks I’m too paranoid – but HOLY SHEET, even she wouldn’t do *that*.

I suppose she thinks that you are the one with the ‘problem’ right? Sheesh.

    • OH of course I’m the one wit the problems. That GOODNESS I have an amazing mom who really worries about the kids all the time

oh no ! I would be sooooo pissed off.
what planet does she live on – those places are perfect for all the sick people of the world to prey on our children.

You paranoid in this situation ?? ABSOLUTELY NOT !!! I would be so totally upset. In my opinion that is an open invitation to losing your kids !!! Anything can happen a Games Center, for crying out loud man !!!

And not just ADULTs that are bad – what about other nasty little children that have been left there too many times?????

Oh my word ! What we think is logic is clearly not in everyone else’s book. That’s frightening.

    Oh my !

  15. OMG I just got palpitations reading that!!! Never ever ever ever would I leave my kids either at movies alone or at one of those centres alone until they were at least 16!

I am so glad they are ok!

Sjoe Mel, that is very careless of your MIL…….I mean you JUST DONT do things like that anymore, not in todays day and age!~ You have every right to be angry and paranoid!

    July 16, 2009 at 11:50 pm

  17. That is terrible. My mouth fell open when I read that.

If my MIL were to pull a stunt like that with my children there would be no more spending the night at her house! Its sad to me that you need have some one supervise a visit when the grand ma is in involved but if that’s the way she wants to act that’s what would need to be done! I am sorry that you had to go through that and I am impressed you didn’t get pissed off at her!!

    July 19, 2009 at 5:48 am

  19. I am 100% with you on all those points Mel!

    July 19, 2009 at 8:41 am

  20. I totally 100% agree with you. Jackson is 9 and we would never ever leave him unattended in public, not even with his 12 year old cousin. Probably not with his 14 year old cousin.
