Super Mom

Too much, too young?

Maybe I’m wrong but I think at the tender age of 4, Zander is too young to get homework.  Not homework even but work that he needs to know, so that he can be assessed for his school report.

Monday he needed to learn parts of his body.  Not the average, hand, head, feet, toes parts.  No the fine detail of ear lobe, foot sole … stuff like that.

For today he had to learn colours and shapes (which I don’t actually have a problem with)

For Friday though, he needs to be able to recite a rhyme and then come and tell a story.

He got a piece of paper with all the detail of what he needs to learn.

Now learning, I don’t have a problem with. Learning this at school in a playful atmosphere, I don’t have a problem with.  But sending it home as ‘homework’. …  I don’t know.  I just think it puts too much pressure on a FOUR year old.

Maybe in Grade R or Grade 1 or even the last year of pre-school but he is not there yet!

  1. Sheesh Mel – it *does* sound hard. My eldest is in a school where “proper-big-school-in-uniform” starts at 4yrs and runs on the British Curriculum – and even he doesn’t have to do that kind of homework yet. What they do – is ask the kids to bring something to school relating to a specific topic – so for example if the topic for the week is water, then they can bring in a postcard of the sea, or drawing of the rain etc. Then during that week everything they do – will be on that subject. “Maths” they will count raindrops, for “science” they learn how rain fills rivers etc. All very playful and easy. The memorizing thing would stress my boy out *way* too much. That’s really hard to do at that age. Numbers and colours fine, but the other stuff sheesh.

  2. Wow! That’s tough! It also sounds a bit hectic to me.
And who is supposed to get that learning done? Mom, off course!
    Good luck 😀

  3. YOH! Kiara is doing that now in Grade 1!!!

The shapes and colours is fine but the rest really seems excessive!

  4. Is he in 000? I really hope that Connor doesnt get homework next year. I’m almost sure Bradley only started getting homework in Grade 0

  6. I agree as well, that’s totally over the top.
Surely their little brains are not ready for that yet. Play and socialising is way more important.
