Facebook

This weekend we saw a friend that I have not seen in a while and he mentioned that he knows exactly what is going on in my life, since he follows it on Facebook.  Great, I thought …. it’s what Facebook is for right?

Then he mentioned how he doesn’t really use Facebook.  That he only went on to find his old friends and that he definitely does not use the status update.  I figured that he didn’t like the fact that people would say what they are doing, where they are (or like me current update – what I’m having for dinner lol) or what they are thinking.

It got me thinking.  What’s the issue?  It’s a social network.  To keep contact.  I love that I know what Wenchy is doing, even if I haven’t seen her or spoken to her in ages.  I have caught up with family members that I never used to be close to.  Now I know what they are up to and like or don’t like, just by following their updates.

What do you think the “status update” should be used for?

I update my status often. Like 10 times a day. Its *my* status and I can use it any way I want to….I find most people enjoy it and often comment….if other of my friends find it annoying they can choose to *hide* me from their newsfeed.

  2. I think status updates are for whatever you want them to be. But be careful about putting too much personal or private information out there if you really don’t want anyone in that part of your business. I just like them for fun mostly, and to keep contact with people.
But they shouldn’t really be used as a diary.

  3. I love FB. I’m not an addict (and I have friends who are!). It allows me to keep in touch with people I otherwise wouldn’t take to. I try to update my status at least a few times a week, sometimes every day.

I think you can put just what you like in the Status Updates, that’s what it’s there for…..! I like the contact FB allows and if you use if correctly it is very safe!

  5. I use it for anything, although I never post exactly where I’m going to be – although my privacy settings are set to ‘friends only’. I also use it for whatever, some music lyrics that stick in my brain, whatever, but there seems to be some thing amongst guys that somehow updating statuses is ‘uncool’ when really the people who feel that way are just not comfortable with social media in general.

  6. I forgot to add that my husband used to turn his nose up at the idea of Twitter, until I showed him he could follow people like Bob Skinstad and John Smit etc and now he is ALL about HOW COOL Twitter is! 😉

  8. I like Facebook to keep up to date what my brother and sister is doing in the UK – it actually feels as if we are more “connected” now than when they were here!

  11. I love social media for that exact reason!

Some days my life gets hectic but I can sit with my coffee and run through twitter and facebook and then I know whats happening! Sometimes I miss important things as they happen but eventually I do get all the news and happenings!

You often also pick up on things you may not – like you know when someone is not well or feeling down or if their kids are sick etc! And during those times you dont always want to mail or call and say “Hi I am sick”

  12. I use it for whatever I want to. I like reading updates and makes me feel that, although I don’t see some of my friends often, I am still part of their lives.

I HATE HATE HATE Facebook. But Twitter is cool. All I need is the status update thing – nothing more.

  15. I like both FB and twitter for different reasons… twitter to learn and share, and FB to catch up with friends.
